Natural Sequence Farming – Peter Andrews

Peter Andrews, a pioneer in regenerative farming, shows us that a little bit of common sense and a love of nature go a long way.

After multiple droughts, Peter is left with a barren, badly degraded landscape and realises his conventional farming methods are making matters much worse. Tilling and overgrazing have stripped the land of its vegetation leaving soils bare, exacerbating evaporation and erosion.

Peter begins a lifelong journey to restore natural processes and rehydrate the landscape. Through Peter, we come to understand that the many hardships caused by climatic factors (drought and flood) can be significantly reduced if we simply work with nature rather than against it.

This is a story of courage in the face of an agricultural system that prioritises short-term financial gain over the health of the country and people. At a time when the government is incentivising farmers to remove water-hungry vegetation from river banks to make more water available for irrigation, Peter does just the opposite. Peter shows us that what we thought was the problem is actually the solution and by holding water back we slow the flow of water which restores soil hydrology. With water comes life, biodiversity returns, and balance can be restored to a once degraded system.

Working with nature and farming in her image, is the only sure-fire way we have of creating drought and flood proof farming systems.
