Swale Workshop – Curl Curl

The Brief

The workshop host was having water issues during large rain events, with water sheeting down the side of her property and flooding the shed and other parts of the garden.

Our Approach

We built a swale to catch excess water and divert it away from the problem areas. A swale is a trench on contour that effectively catches, stores and then distributes water. Using a swale in this project, we were able to divert water into a more desirable part of the garden where water would be beneficial.

Outcomes

  • A swale to catch and slow water

  • No more flooding of the shed

  • More water soaked into the soil and distributed to desirable parts of the garden

  • Additional planting on the mound
