Edible Gardening Workshop – Belrose

The Brief

The workshop host had built 4 raised garden beds but wanted some instruction on where to go next. Some big questions were: how do I fill the beds? What type of soil should I use? What do I plant? Is there anything else I should know? All very important questions, and so with Permaculture Northern Beaches, we organised a workshop to demonstrate best practices.

Our Approach

Firstly, there was some prework to be done to get the beds ready for workshop day. We suggested converting 2 beds to wicking beds. We also collected various materials to order to demonstrate the lasagne-style method of filling garden beds. This was a healthy alternative to buying soil from the landscape store. We also had Water Ups come out and do some education around the science and benefits of wicking beds.

Outcomes

  • 4 garden beds filled using the lasagne style method

  • 2 beds converted to wicking beds

  • Lots of happy workshop participants

  • Full bellies from an amazing lunch put on by our host
